An Ultrasound technician or sonographer or ultrasonographer is trained to use very specialized equipment that uses sound waves that produce echos when placed on certain areas of the body. These echos are then able to be translated into shadows and images that allow physicians and other medical personnel to see an image with the naked eye that represents the inside of the body. These images are then used to diagnose disease and a variety of other conditions.

Most specialist work within a hospital or clinical setting or a specialized imaging laboratory. They must complete educational and training courses which include a significant amount of time in a clinical lab setting with hands-on training. The field of Ultrasound is growing and the demand for trained ultrasound technicians continues to grow as well.

Probably the most well-known use for this kind of technology is in the field of obstetrics. It is very rare for a pregnant woman not to have received one or more ultrasounds during their pregnancy. This image of the unborn baby is usually the first glimpse of the baby for the parents. Of course, this is a very exciting use for this technology. In addition to a regular ultrasound, there are also 3D and 4D ultrasound machines that can capture the images of an unborn baby. This is very useful as the parents and the doctors can see a dimensional view showing all sides of the unborn baby.

It is harmless and painless. It directs high frequency sound waves that penetrate into human tissue. It is especially useful on the soft tissues throughout the body, which makes it very useful for examining and diagnosing any of the organs within the human body, such as the liver, the pancreas and the stomach and intestinal system.

The job of the technician is to ensure the proper operation of the ultrasound equipment. This equipment is highly specialized and producing accurate images is crucial for helping doctors to make an effective diagnosis. They must be able to get the patient to relax so it is important for them to be able to develop a rapport with the patients. Good communication skills are a must in order to ensure an effective image.

In order to become an ultrasound technician you must complete a prescribed course. Typically the training takes two years with an emphasis on hands-on clinical lab work as an apprentice working under a professional technician. In order to take the training the student must have a high school diploma or equivalent and it is useful to be adept at math, science and other health-related subjects.
